Effective Practices in Family Literacy Programs for Immigrant Families

(September 2006 – August 2007)

Alberta Advanced Education, Community Programs Branch and the Centre for Family Literacy engaged in a project to identify effective family literacy practices in working with immigrant families with preschool children.  The project helped identify current resources, tools and practices that are being used, the gaps that exist within family literacy programming and policies, the strengths and capacities can be identified and how existing practices could be improved to address existing gaps in family literacy programming in Alberta or enhance existing strengths and capacities. The project activities included consultation with the stakeholders, collection and analyses of the background information, a literature review, the documentation and inventory of 13 family literacy programs funded through the Family Literacy Initiative Fund, including a document review, interview and a site visit component. The project concluded with a development of a training module on working with immigrant families.
